I did the HD muffler trick last year and share a couple ideas.
1. use muffler sealing rather then RTV, it will last longer and nor burn out as quickly.
2. Try to find/buy the SuperTrapp clamp and heat shield. The clamp is much higher quality and has greater clampong ability. The heat shield finsihes it off.
On my installation I used the HighwayHawk head pipe cut off and only the muffler seal on the joint. Made mine longer than stock and had to create a bracket out of 1/4" 1 3/4 flat bar stock to fit the orginal bracket and the HD muffler mounting lug.
I do like the appearance and sound, I can slip around town and not atract attention, but is mellow and deep on accleration.
